PocketEngine

Standardized, three‑level pocket sorter module designed for buffering, sorting and sequencing items from all warehouse areas.

PocketEngine is an all‑in‑one pocket sorter solution that’s perfect for e‑commerce fulfillment, store replenishment and returns. With dedicated consolidation and sequencing zones, it brings together goods from every area of the warehouse while smoothing out the inevitable processing peaks driven by staggered picking activity.

KNAPP PocketEngine three‑floor design enabling high‑density pocket storage, efficient order sequencing, and scalable multi‑level sortation to optimize throughput and flexibility in modern e‑commerce fulfillment operations.
Thanks to the ergonomic design of the workstations, one employee can pack 150 to 500 items per hour.

PocketEngine Three-Floor Design

Top Floor — Order Consolidation Buffer:

The top floor contains the two-level order consolidation buffer. The buffer consolidates items from different areas around the warehouse—that were picked at different speeds—and automatically smoothes out peaks.

Middle Floor — Run-Buffer/Sequencing Sorter:

The middle floor houses the Run-Buffer and the sequencing sorter. Here, orders and pockets are perfectly sequenced to make the subsequent packing process even more efficient.

Bottom Foor — Induction & Packing Areas:

The bottom floor is where the entire process begins. This area is equipped with high-performance camera scanners as well as ergonomically designed workstations that allow each employee to induct 500 to 1,000 items per hour into the sorter pockets. Sequenced and consolidated orders are conveyed to the packing area, where employees transfer the items from the sorter pockets into the shipping cartons.

All-in-One Pocket Sorter Solution

PocketEngine follows a standardized layout, but it’s engineered to support a wide range of distribution needs. The system manages every major step of the process─induction, buffering, sequencing and retrieval─making it a strong fit for multiple fulfillment models across retail and e‑commerce.

Returns Management

In e‑commerce, accurate sequencing and dependable buffering are essential for meeting delivery expectations. PocketEngine handles both with ease, managing hanging apparel along with folded and flat‑packed products. The result is a smooth, organized flow that supports fast order assembly during peak and off‑peak periods.

For store replenishment, PocketEngine brings together hanging items, folded goods and flat‑packed merchandise in a format optimized for retail operations. By pairing EcoFlow adapters with EcoPockets, the system supports efficient, store‑ready order creation that reduces touchpoints and keeps replenishment moving.

Returns can be staged in the dynamic buffer so employees can access them quickly throughout the day. This helps keep returned items available for immediate reuse in order processing, reducing inventory delays and supporting faster turnaround times.

Three‑step PocketEngine sequencing process shown with induction, dynamic buffering and final sequencing, illustrating how the pocket sorter organizes and releases items in the correct order for e‑commerce fulfillment, store replenishment and returns processing.
The three steps control flow end to end: consolidate incoming items, synchronize release order, then balance workload at pack out.

Perfect Sequencing in 3 Easy Steps

1. Consolidate

Items enter PocketEngine from across the warehouse, coming from different storage systems and picked at different speeds. At ergonomic induction workstations, employees load items into pockets, and each item is digitally linked to its assigned pocket. From there, pockets move to the consolidation buffer on the top level.

2. Synchronize

The Run‑Buffer and sequencing sorter on the middle level position items in the correct sequence, preparing each order for smooth, efficient packing downstream.

3. Balance

Orders are completed in the packing area, where the system automatically distributes work across available pack stations to account for natural differences in packing speeds.

EcoPocket

At the heart of the PocketEngine is the EcoPocket pocket sorter, an overhead sorting and sequencing system equipped with sorter pockets. The pockets transport single items of different properties.

All pockets used in the PocketEngine are the same size. Pockets can hold small and medium-sized items such as cosmetics and electronics as well as hanging, folded or flat-packed goods and even larger goods weighing up to 6.6 pounds such as shoe boxes.
